Born in 1948, Martin Wright is a chartered civil engineer who graduated from Liverpool University in 1969, became a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1974 and a fellow in 1991. He has been involved in the Coastal Engineering, Highway, Land Reclamation, and Municipal Engineering sectors during his career when he has worked for Cheshire CC, Robinson Jones Partnership, Meirionnydd DC and Gwynedd Council. He has been a director of MWA since its formation where he specialises in Project Management, Coastal Engineering and Business Development.
Martin started his career in Coastal Engineering in 1979 with Meirionydd District Council where as Deputy Chief Technical Officer & Chief Engineer he was responsible for the Council’s engineering capital works programme – which included the £8 million Tywyn coastal defence scheme and other multi-million pound schemes – and later for developing two Shoreline Management Plans in Cell 9 (Cardigan Bay), together with their associated monitoring regimes.
He has been the chairman of the Cardigan Bay Coastal Group since its inception in 1990 and has carefully guided this Group through its formative years. He has been an energetic member of the Regional Coastal Groups National Committee since it was formed in 1991 and has been proactive in developing their national profile particularly with regard to their liaison with MAFF (Now DEFRA) & the National Assembly for Wales. He has also served on the important Shoreline Management Plan Advisory Group from 1996 to 1998.
Martin was a founder member of the TAG Coastal Management Committee in 1991 and was Chairman from 1996 to 1998. He is one of TAG’s two man team who meet DEFRA in their technical sub-committee and has also written advisory papers for the committee.
Martin also sits on the Institution of Civil Engineers specialist committee which is currently producing a ‘Design & Practice Guide’ on Coastal Defence and has also produced a ‘Briefing Sheet’ for the Association of Municipal Engineers on Coastal Defence.
This extensive experience over the past twenty years has led to Martin having a high profile in Coastal Engineering, particularly in the rapidly evolving Coastal Management sector. This has enabled him to offer advice and guidance to his clients on this subject.
Martin also has a vast experience in the Municipal Engineering field and has, in the last ten years, had an increasing national profile through serving on and indeed chairing, many municipal engineering orientated committees. He currently advises on ‘business development’ when he utilises his knowledge and experience for the benefit of his ever increasing client list.
Project Management has also taken a high profile with MWA’s clients during the past three years when Martin has project managed schemes for various clients. His expertise is such that he can carry out a full range of services for both Consultants and Contractors alike.
